TRAGIC IS HURT HURT
Movie Review
Everyone wishes for a romantic happy ever after. But when fate comes into the scene, a twist might happen in that lovey-dovey story
By| Kevin Barrera
Not all people get their most-wanted happily-ever-after ending. Not all love stories end with the couples living their life ‘til they turn old. And sad events happen as fate takes a sudden tragic turn that leads the viewers into teary solitude. As this movie would break your heart, it reveals another twisted fate of two lovers who are not to be with each other ‘til the end.
What is the fault in their stars that they ended up being like this?
The faulty plot
Sixteen-year old Hazel Grace Lancaster was diagnosed of terminal thyroid cancer and was forced by her mother to attend a life group for cancer patients to ease her ‘depression’. She reluctantly accepted her mother’s request in hope of making friends. In this support group she met Augustus Waters who immediately bonded with Hazel and invited her to his house. Sharing each other’s experiences in cancer, Hazel found out that Augustus has an osteosarcoma or a malignant bone cancer which leads to the amputation of one of his legs.
Hazel recommended to Augustus to read the book The Imperial Affliction which runs the same as Hazel’s story (Anna is the lead character). Finding that the book ends in mid-sentence, Augustus helped Hazel to track the book’s author Peter Van Houten and ask for its ending. Luckily, Van Houten told them that he could only answer them in person and invited Hazel in person.
Though excited to travel, Hazel suddenly suffered pleural effusion or an outburst in the wall of her thorax and was confined in ICU which threatened her chance of going overseas. Eventually, Hazel was allowed to travel to Amsterdam to meet Van Houten.
Surprised, they saw Van Houten as mean-spirited drunkard rather than a prolific genius they believed him to be. It was revealed later on that Van Houten’s assistant Lidewij was the one who arranged the meeting which angered the writer leading to Van Houten insulting Hazel’s cancer and not answering her questions. Due to anger and disappointment, they both left the house.
After the incidence, they chose to visit Ann Frank’s house in a tour, shared a very romantic kiss after it and gave each other’s body and soul in their hotel room. Unfortunately, Augustus’s cancer got even worse than before which strengthened their love for each other even more. Because of his worsening condition, Augustus arranged a pre-funeral for himself and requested Hazel and his blind best friend, Isaac to give their eulogy to him. Eight days later, Augustus died.
At the funeral, Hazel was surprised to see the mean author and he explained that the Augustus and Van Houten maintained their correspondence after they had left Amsterdam. He finally confided to her that his book was based on the story of his daughter who died of cancer at a young age. He tried to give Hazel a piece of paper which contains the fate of Anna’s mother but Hazel crumpled it instead.
Isaac revealed to Hazel that Augustus asked for Van Houten’s assistance in writing a eulogy for her. She retrieved the crumpled paper and read Augustus’s words stating his acceptance of death and his love for her which she actually returns.
The heartbreaking truth
The Fault in Our Stars is based on book of the same name written by John Green in 2012. Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort got the role of Hazel and Augustus, respectively. Green got the inspiration of writing this novel from a children’s hospital and Hazel’s story from Esther Earl who died of thyroid cancer, and who was also his friend.
Many people have cried from reading the book up to watching the film because of its tragic ending. And Filipinos are the first persons who got so attached to the story itself. This story does not exist only in books but also in real life. Recently, becoming viral in YouTube about the emotional wedding of a couple where the groom was on the verge of death. Her name is Liezl who got married to his stage-four-liver-cancer-stricken boyfriend Rowden Go Pangcoga. They already planned for their wedding and even death could not stop them from joining their hearts as one in front of God. Unfortunately, hours later, the groom passed away leading to a tragic close.
True love is infinite
We always wish for a happy ending in our lives with our special someone. We keep bragging to other people that we are meant to each other for infinity. But we could never anticipate what fate might give us once it started its mischievous change in the track of our love story. Maybe, we end up enjoying our lives up to our silvered hair, ragged skin and weakened joints but also, it may end up with one of us never witnessing a lifelong worth of romantic joy.
Even though death does part two hearts that love each other so much, still it wouldn’t erase the memories and the feelings these loving persons have for each other. Pain and grief may lower us down deeply after being left alone but it is not yet the end of one’s love towards the departed other.
Infinity doesn’t exist only in physical life but true infinity is found in the afterlife where two rejoined hearts will love each other for eternity and eternity and eternity.
TRAGIC LIST
“Pain demands to be felt.” –Augustus
Prep up a box of Kleenex before watching these tear-jerking movies.
TITANIC (1998)
Hohoho… Jack and Rose, is that you? Their stories have marked our minds, a story which developed within the unsinkable ship, Titanic. And that tragic moment when Jack is frozen dead and Rose survives. But the love doesn’t sink along with the ship itself.
A WALK TO REMEMBER (2001)
We could never forget Jamie and Landon’s story in this wonderful but sad love story written by Nicolas Sparks. This story tells us that even how painful the ending was, we still need to move on with ourselves. But it gives us the inspiration to do better for our loved one like what Landon did for Jamie.
ROMEO AND JULIET (2013)
Well, well, well! Which is the most well-known tragic story of all time? Of course, Romeo and Juliet themselves. Who dare say that rivalry between two families would stop the true love from two couples to each other? But only be separated apart by misconception that the other is dead?
